She grows up under the shadow of her elder sister, Chihaya Ayase, a strong-willed and tomboyish girl. Without any dreams of her own, she is content with her share in life until she meets Arata Wataya. In an elementary school class, a quiet transfer student teaches her about competitive karuta, which is a physically and mentally demanding card game modeled on the Hundred Poets classic Japanese anthology. Passionate about the game and motivated to achieve the greatest possible success in Japan, Chihaya falls in love with karuta right away.
She joins the local Shiranami Society alongside the prodigy Arata and her hard-working but haughty friend Taichi Mashima. When circumstances separate them, the trio spends their idyllic childhood days playing together instead of working together. Now that Chihaya has entered high school, she has become a karuta freak. With her sights set on the national championship at Omi Jingu, she intends to establish the Municipal Mizusawa High Competitive Karuta Club. Reunited with the now indifferent Taichi, Chihaya’s dream of establishing a karuta team is one step closer to becoming a reality: she must bring together players of similar passion for the game.
